Ou est la piscine? Holiday play lists

24 May

As the the days tick down ’til we head into the Eurotunnel (or the ‘water train’ as Reuben (3) calls it), time’s running out to prepare the holiday play list.

The stakes are high this year as we face a 12-hour drive to reach our destination in the Vendee region of France. It may seem a minor matter, but the alernative is shouted demands from the kids of repeat plays of Now 78, and there’s only so many times I can listen to Bruno Mars brag about decapitating himself in the name of romance (Grenade).

So The Play List Committee – myself, Dan (12) and Rosie (9) – convened briefly this evening and hammered out a deal, which, basically, gave them two picks each. I’ve also considered the younger kids (Toy Story 3), Lisa (Noah and the Whale) and the French (Phoenix and Tahiti 80) plus my favourites – Chris Brown and Katy Perry (obviously).

What normally happens is that the children love one particular song which we then have to play again and again and again or endure screams from the back seats. Previously it was Junior Senior’s Move Your Feet. This year, it’ll be Yeasayer or Van Morrison – in my dreams.

Below is the France 2011 Play List in full and, below that, Flight of the Conchords in all their ‘soup du jour’ glory. This song soundtracked the YouTube advert to our holiday accommodation,  which was a clincher for me (who cares if it’s in the middle of an industrial estate?).

The committee would appreciate your feedback…

Half-way down the playlist I became convinced that you were just making bands up – Duck Sauce? Dutch Uncles? Either you’re having a good laugh at some elaborate joke (do the first letters of all the artists spell a rude word..?!) or I’m even less in touch with ‘popular’ music than I’d thought. And I can only blame one guru for that…
